TASK 3: CONVENTIONS: Research the key conventions of current affairs magazines. Consider the design, layout, types of articles. You could use the  Big Issue Powerpoint  and the  Big Issue Cover Guide  to help you pick out key conventions. Basic conventions Masthead – the masthead is the title block for the magazine, usually this is the most eye-catching convention on a page and has to be distinct Menu – the list of contents inside the paper By-line – name of the reporter  Caption – text underneath a image explaining it Headline - main statement, usually in the largest and boldest font, describing the main story, a banner headline spans the full width of the page Analysis of magazine covers The first cover I have chosen to analyse is The Week Typically, The Week has a humorous , caricature front cover. This grabs the attention of the audience. This is usually accompanied by a plain, or uncluttered background.   There are always 3 differing images across  the top.

TASK 2: MAGAZINES: Research two or three current affairs magazines, including The Week and two others of your choice, preferable aimed at younger people. Make a short description of each, including how long they have been running, their social media profiles, types of articles they publish. The Week - Website analysis

The layout of the website is clean and uncluttered, with a plain white background. Synergy is  created immediately with the masthead matches that of the magazine and in the same font, all capitals and the same shade of red. On the left hand corner of the masthead is a menu icon with the word 'menu' underneath for clarity. Next to this is the search icon with a search bar. On the right corner of the masthead is an image of the current week's print cover, next to two call to action buttons: 'Subscribe' and 'Give a Gift.' Underneath is an advertising gif taking up almost the width of the page. This changes constantly, advertising services such as Adobe and Vanguard. The chosen stories take up the left two thirds of the page. The main story has a picture with a headline and standfirst over the picture, followed by a bullet-pointed list of 'Five things you need to know' next to a humorous cartoon. COURSEWORK PLAN Brief 3: Magazines and online You work for an independent media production company. You have been given the task of producing one front cover and the contents page(s) of the first two editions of a new current affairs magazine that is being launched by Dennis and two pages for the working website for the magazine. Contents pages can be either single or double page spread. The web pages must promote the new magazine to its target audience and enable fans to interact with the content. Summary of brief requirements: • Statement of Intent (approx. 500 words). • Current affairs magazine covers and contents pages: Two or three pages for each of the first two editions (based on choice of single or double page spread). • Magazine distribution method: Content must be suitable for retail distribution. • Number of web pages: One homepage and one linked page. • Cross-media production target audience: A socially-conscious, 16–25, middle to upmarket demographic.
